Dartmouth Linguistics Professor Receives Humboldt Fellowship

Associate Professor of Linguistics Laura McPherson has been awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, which will support a six-month stay as a visiting scholar at the University of Cologne in Germany. Her project, "Expanding the boundaries of tone research", investigates tone in two novel domains: children's acquisition of grammatical tone in Seenku, a language of Burkina Faso, and the role of tone in musical surrogate languages and the language-music interface. She will collaborate with scholars at the University of Cologne to bring tone into research areas where it has historically been underrepresented.
